Nine Courses To Jump-Start Your Cloud Security Knowledge

Cloud became a major force in IT and this is a time to update your cloud security knowledge - staying competitive and getting promos and bonuses.

We carefully selected nine best cloud security courses from Coursera, covering all four major cloud ecosystems - Alibaba Cloud, AWS, Azure and Google Cloud.
Line-of-business leaders everywhere are bypassing IT departments to get applications from the cloud (also known as software as a service, or SaaS) and paying for them like they would a magazine subscription. And when the service is no longer required, they can cancel that subscription with no equipment left unused in the corner

1. Cloud Computing Fundamentals on Alibaba Cloud from Alibaba Cloud Academy is a capstone for further learning and research of AliCloud ecosystem and its security controls. It takes approx 12 hours to complete and encompasses lessons about setting up and managing servers, databases, object storage and load balancers. The course is free just for 2021 and gives a lot of mercy - requires just 3 hours per week.

2. Protecting Cloud Architecture with Alibaba Cloud from the same vendor is the most straightforward way to immerse yourself with cloud security inside AliCloud. Just 7 hours and you're ready to employ basic controls on the host and network level, as well as back-up and data encryption options.
3. AWS Fundamentals: Addressing Security Risk from AWS offers a mix of foundation knowledge and practical security mechanisms intended to prevent, detect and respond to cloud data breaches. Its length is 7 hours at it covers shared security responsibility model, high-level review of AWS Well-Architected Framework, application of AWS Security Hub, AWS Detective, AWS CloudTrail, AWS Config and AWS GuardDuty.

4. AWS Fundamentals includes the previous one but gives a much broader overview of information assets and cloud computing services to be secured. The course shows you through demonstration of how to deploy and manage cloud-native applications, migrate applications to AWS and employ advanced scenarios like serverless (AWS Lambda). Although the course is free there is paid access to hands-on labs, but we recommend just help a charity for free (pro bono work) and gain a required hand-on experience. From time to time we're doing the same (drop us a line at welcome@cyberlands.io) if you represent a charity organization and need a security assessment of your API or cloud. Overall the course is medium in size - 40 hours to complete with low pace (5 months, 2 hours per week).
5. Getting Started with Azure from LearnQuest takes 20 hours long and covers Azure tools and services, Azure network security and management and gives a separate lesson on firewall management. The course is free and you'll need 12 hours to complete it.
6. Security in Google Cloud Platform Specialization from Google Cloud consists of four smaller ones covering core infrastructure services, management of security vulnerabilities, cloud identity management, cloud network security and data encryption in the cloud. Everything is packed in 36 learning hours.

7. Google Cloud Security Professional Certificate includes previous one and adds on top design and implementation of cloud networking as well as hands-on labs for security engineers. The labs include identity management, VPC-related and Kubernetes-relates security tasks. The course totals 60 learning hours.
8. Cloud Security Basics from the University of Minnesota is a vendor-agnostic cloud security course and covers multi-cloud security approaches. The course is focused on cloud architecture and planning, cryptography applications in the cloud, cloud network security, vulnerability analysis and segregation of duties. Course syllabus totals 13 hours.

9. Cybersecurity in the Cloud Specialization incorporates the previous one and enriches by adding basics of DevSecOps, a brief description of OWAST TOP-10 vulnerabilities, database security, an analysis of data breach example and a lot of knowledge about data protection and privacy legislation such as GDPR. This major course totals 36 learning hours.

Summary on cloud security courses - AWS, Azure, Google Cloud and AliCloud

Learning everything described above would take a whole working month - 167 hours combined. It would be appropriate for a student but for working professional we recommend to focus on the multi-cloud course from the University of Minnesota and cloud of your choose - the one your organization is planning to use for its workloads.

The second option is to focus on AliCloud-related courses - they're just smaller ones and stick to cloud security fundamentals.
